(all content subject to memory disclaimers) I worked at the IBM Boston Programming Center in 545 from 1968 to 1970... it's the organization where Nat Rochester and Jean Sammet worked, and was closed down in 1970. It was part of the long defunct IBM Federal Systems division, and (as I understand it) was created by IBM to provide a home for Nat and Jean that met their geographical preferences. BPC acted as a conduit from MIT to Watson Research Center: a number of people traveled that path, including Patricia Cundall Goldberg, Marc Auslander, William Henry Harrison IV (or so)and yours truly. While I never worked at the CSC, I have a historical question about it, specifically about someone there who developed a concept for a "four function text editor" around 1969... George, thanks for pointing out that most (or all) of New England's angel groups welcome entrepreneurs to pitch them with no cover charge.

But I don't think I or other journos were "mis-reporting" anything: Open Angel Forum was created as a response to those events that *do* charge entrepreneurs. One of these was planned for this past spring at Microsoft's Cambridge office, which booted the group once it learned of the deal.

What many of the articles who refer to early adopters as exhibiting irrational behavior conveniently omit is that there is an opportunity cost to *not* being an early adopter. In my case I am able to do things with my iPad that I could only otherwise reasonably do with a laptop computer, which costs significantly more while using a larger footprint with a lower battery life. By being an early adopter I gain those advantages, which translate into greater productivity and therefore, certainly over the life of the iPad, a negative cost of ownership.

Why *wouldn't* I be an early adopter?

Alex, I definitely do not see the iPad taking over the Kindle at all... well, maybe years down the road, but look at the people you see using the Kindle, many MANY older people. And many older people who likely will not be using an iPad, ever.

Tom, keep the RiverRun going as it is. Nobody can expect you to match Amazon pricing... in all honesty, not many people can. I've stopped by for a few speakers (mainly because of one of my old college English professors R. Wheeler.) Keep it up! I love the place...and the little cafe next door.

George, I came here via an article at SeacoastOnline.com. I need to keep up to date while living abroad (Madrid), and it was nice seeing a little niche venture firm in the seacoast. Thanks for the mention, George. Hosting over 100 book events a year is one of the ways we try to compete with online pricing. We cannot compete on price-- it's impossible when Amazon often treats my entire industry as a loss-lead for its other commerce (They regularly price bestsellers cheaper than I can buy them from the publisher). Even trying is foolhardy.

We continue to exist because enough of our customers enjoy the events, the ambiance, and the browsing we offer in an enjoyable downtown setting. Our community has enough book-lovers who realize for us to keep doing what we do, they have to spend their book allowance here.

The cost of doing business downtown, in a brick-and-mortar building, with intelligent, capable staff is full price. Anyone checking out my wardrobe knows we are not getting rich doing this!

Will the iPad kill the Kindle? The cheapest iPad is currently $499, twice the price of the Kindle. But the iPad can do 1000 times more functions than the Kindle apart from downloading and reading books. BUT, does anyone need those extra functions when they already have a smartphone and multiple laptops and computers in the house?

George, thanks for sharing this. I did some digging on the OAF website and I can't see what they charge angel to be a part, nor can I see what management services are provided. Did I just miss it? Or are they essentially a extremely light-structure angel group with bare minimum management - a true "forum"?
